Question 1

Can you read my secret?

Accepted Answer

No. Your browser locks the text with a random key before sending it. The key stays in the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to any server. We store only the locked text.

Question 2

What if a chat app previews the link?

Accepted Answer

Nothing is opened by a preview. The secret is shown only when the person presses the button on the page, so apps that fetch links cannot use it up.

Question 3

Where is it stored?

Accepted Answer

In Google Cloud in Mumbai, India, in locked form. Standard technical logs of the host may be kept; they never contain your secret. We cannot promise that network traffic never passes through other places on its way, only that it is locked.

Question 4

What happens after it is opened?

Accepted Answer

The locked text is deleted from our database in the same step. A small note that it was opened (no content) stays for a day so you can check.

Question 5

What if I set a passphrase and they type it wrong?

Accepted Answer

The secret stays safe. After 5 wrong tries it is destroyed.

Question 6

How big can a secret be, and what does it cost?

Accepted Answer

About 10,000 bytes of text (roughly 3,000 Hindi characters, or 10,000 English ones). It is free.
